The following aspects of assessment have been subdivided into dimensions in line with the ‘Assessment framework for children in need and their families (2000)’, (Click here for guidance document to this). Each links to a description of what is typically found at universal, additional, multiple additional and specialist levels of need within the dimension.
The descriptors aim to provide practitioners with guidance to promote a common understanding of the most likely level of need being experienced by a child or young person, where they have a worry or concern about a child. They are a guide only, they do not aim to cover every situation or combination of needs that practitioners may encounter. They aim to facilitate a practitioner’s own assessment of need.
Whilst the framework is a useful guide to gathering information, it is not a tick list. The final assessment should not simply comprise three lists of factors linked to the three assessment dimensions. Analysis must consider the relationships between significant factors to determine their cumulative effect and the balance between risk / resilience and protective factors. Any assessment requires the knowledge, skills and expertise of well supported practitioners, to judge the best course of action based on sound evidence.
